there nothing related 3.11... there menu.lst in /boot/grub entries related 3.11, removed file.

there nothing related 3.11 in /boot or /etc/default/grub, /initrd.img points boot/initrd.img-4.4.0-45-generic, /vmlinuz points boot/vmlinuz-4.4.0-45-generic etc.

what can upgrade kernel 4.4.x?

btw, after every change remembered update-grub, doing update-initramfs , rebooted server...

you mentioned you're using digitalocean droplet. method of kernel deployment differs system running on bare metal

refer digital ocean's documentation kernel upgrades.

to sum gotchas:

  • if you're using kernel provided control panel, you'll have make changes there, too.
  • reboot of droplet alone not upgrade kernel, shutdown does
  • you can select special grubloader kernel delegate kernel selection guest operaing system.
