live usb - "Can't open /scripts/casper" - Ask Ubuntu
after attempting upgrade xenial yakkety on live usb, encountered error upon attempting reboot. during boot, there kernel panic, evidently caused fact /init
unable open /scripts/casper
the following 3 lines before kernel panic , first line of kernel panic
begin: loading essential drivers ... done. begin: running /scripts/init-premount ... done begin: mounting root file system ... /init: .: line 257: can't open '/scripts/casper' [ 34.941779] kernel panic - not syncing: attempted kill init! exitcode=0x00000200
i had guessed @ first maybe /scripts/casper/
file missing in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/
in squashfs, seems there, , normal permissions.
what cause of problem, , how 1 fix it?
did try 'do-release-upgrade' persistent live usb drive next ubuntu release?
i don't think work. can keep (backup , later restore) home directory, best stored in home-rw partition (or file), should remove other directories , files (except upper/home , upper/lost+found) casper-rw partition (or file), , start using iso file new ubuntu release.
this means can keep personal files, program settings , tweaks, must reinstall programs added.
-o-
it possible 'do-release-upgrade' system installed in usb drive (installed internal drive, usb drive).
the problems , solutions should same or similar normal installed system.
