there several questions floating around getting ubuntu lts working nvidia 960m cards. given there's no definitive answer, want offer following: after testing several distros, knoppix , kali both worked without problems.
so, questions:
- what different ubuntu nvidia drivers don't work out of box?
- more importantly, there easy way (for end user) import whatever's working ubuntu 16.04?
edit: here's tried:
- purged nvidia-* , reinstalled 364 drivers.
- got login loop, followed answers here (chown, chmod, rm .xauthority, , /tmp)
- reinstalled xorg , unity.
- went nvidia website , found latest driver version works card (opted long lived branch).
- purged nvidia* (no dash, following tip in comment), , reinstalled 367 drivers.
- purged nvidia*, reinstalled 370 drivers. stuck @ login loop, after following instructions 2.
do not ever download drivers nvidia's website!
this not recommended practice @ on linux! instead, please remove existing drivers , use package manager: sudo apt install nvidia-current
or use additional drivers menu.
