drivers - After the latest updates on or about Nov 4th Ubuntu 16.04 Unity doesn't accept my password - Ask Ubuntu
i running ubuntu 16.04 unity environment.
the latest updates included driver update nvidia graphics. after updates, ubuntu not login nor accept password. loops login screen.
the graphics on computer on motherboard. using latest kernel - 4.4.0-45. no matter if go previous kernel, nvidia driver selected, cannot use unity now.
how correct this? how revert previous nvidia version? running ubuntu dual-booted mint 18 cinnamon.
how can access ubuntu if cannot login? appears ubuntu 16.04 (latest updates - nvidia) not compatible unity.
i had same problem yesterday. x (lightdm) has started displaying nvidia splash screen. nvidia-driver had worked in general. logon screen appears. after logon on x, screen black , x (lightdm) has started again displaying nvidia splash screen , logon screen.
for me nvidia-driver. latest upgrade had installed nvidia-current
nvidia-304
had failed restart lightdm while x-logon.
but installing nvidia-367
or nvidia-370
suggested often, not real solution nvidia gpus.
we first must detect gpu in use. follow instructions on how install latest nvidia drivers on ubuntu 16.04 xenial xerus.
for me was:
axel@arichter:~$ lspci -vnn | grep vga 01:00.0 vga compatible controller [0300]: nvidia corporation g92m [geforce gtx 260m] [10de:0618] (rev a2) (prog-if 00 [vga controller])
so geforce gtx 260m
in use , nvdia driver search page told me geforce 200m series (notebooks)
driver version: 340.98
must used.
so sudo apt-get purge nvidia-*
, sudo apt-get install nvidia-340
solved problem me.
