in unity, there pre-defined shortcuts, e.g. open dash or unhide launcher?
this page document keyboard shortcuts , mouse tricks unity. please feel free add more!
read first familiar ui elements of unity , find right keys on keyboard:
keyboard shortcuts
holding down super key keyboard overlay documents of these.
launcher
hold super - invoke launcher , display shortcuts
hold super, press 1 or 2 or 3 , on until 0 open or focus application. number corresponds location of icon on launcher top bottom.
- adding shift open new instance of application if it's open.
- holding key useful when want launcher not want invoke dash.
- super + t - open rubbish bin/trash can.
- alt + f1 - put keyboard focus on launcher, use arrow keys navigate, enter launches application, right arrow exposes quicklists if application has them.
- ctrl + alt + t - launch terminal window.
dash
- tap alt - opens the hud
- hold alt - reveals application menu
tap super - opens dash. open signal sent when let go of key, not when push down, if feels slow let go of key earlier.
over item, can hit secondary key (commonly left of right ctrl) see preview of item, can secondary click on it.

* <kbd>ctrl</kbd>-<kbd>tab</kbd> move next lens (when dash open) * <kbd>ctrl</kbd>-<kbd>shift</kbd>-<kbd>tab</kbd> move previous lens (when dash open)
- alt + f2 - invoke dash in "special mode" run command. typing in folder name find folder in nautilus, can use ~ shortcut in field.
- the dash opens focus on search box find applications , files. using arrow keys navigate results, use enter launch. hitting enter twice in rapid succession after search term automatically launch first match in search, if it's still ongoing. (basically dash version of "i'm feeling lucky").
- super + a - open applications lens
- super + f - open files & folders lens
- super + m - open music lens
- super + v - open video lens
panel
- f10 (11.10 , earlier) / alt-f10 (12.04 , earlier) - open first menu on panel, use arrows keys "scrub" across menus. (there no shortcut session menu, hitting f10 , left arrow quick way there)
- press esc close menus without choosing anything.
window management
- ctrl + super + d - show desktop; hitting again restores windows.
- super + w - spread mode, zoom out on windows in workspaces, in 12.04 , 12.10 zooms out on windows in current workspace.
- in spread mode of 14.04 ↑ + ↓ + ← + → navigates through windows, alt + f4 closes selected window, typing text filters windows (for example typing "terminal" leaves terminal windows), enter restores selected window, esc exits spread mode
- super-d - minimize windows; hitting again restores them.
- alt + space - opens window's accessibility menu.
- alt + tab - switch other applications, can hold alt down , hit tab switch next application.
- alt + ` - switch between application's windows. hitting combo when you're focused on application automatically switch between windows application. ` key on layouts, unity use whichever key above tab key. (more information) (video)
- ctrl + super + ↑ - maximize current window
- ctrl + super + ↓ - restore/minimize current window (seems buggy @ moment)
- ctrl + super + ← - maximize current window left
- ctrl + super + → - maximize current window right
window placement
if cycle through same key unity cycle through different placement widths, experiment hitting numkey multiple times, example ctrl + alt + numpad 5 + 5 + 5:
- ctrl-alt + numpad 7 - place window in top left corner of screen.
- ctrl-alt + numpad 8 - place window in top half of screen.
- ctrl-alt + numpad 9 - place window in top right corner of screen.
- ctrl-alt + numpad 5 - center/maximize window in middle of screen. in 12.04 toggles between maximize , restore state
- ctrl-alt + numpad 1 - place window in bottom left corner of screen.
- ctrl-alt + numpad 2 - place window in bottom half of screen.
- ctrl-alt + numpad 3 - place window in bottom right corner of screen.
- ctrl-alt + numpad 0 - minimize current window (ubuntu 12.04.1).
workspace management
- super + s - expo mode (for everything), zooms out on workspaces , lets manage windows.
- shift + alt + ↑ - expo mode windows in current workspace only.
- ctrl + alt + ← / → / ↑ / ↓ - (11.10+) - change new workspace.
- ctrl + alt + shift + ← / → / ↑ / ↓ - place window new workspace.
- ctrl + alt + l - lock screen.

- shift + prtscn - take screenshot of region traced mouse (shows crosshairs)
system
- ctrl + alt + del - logout
mouse tricks
launcher
- clicking , holding icon , dragging around allow reorder on launcher. can drag off right of launcher move around. note need make explicit movement right move icon off launcher before can move around.
- dragging , dropping icon trash can remove launcher. program remain installed , accessible through dash.
- scrolling mouse wheel while on launcher scrolls icons if have many , need move around quickly.
window management
- maximizing - dragging window top panel, or double-clicking window's titlebar, or alt + f10 (11.10 , earlier), maximize it.
- restore - there 2 ways restore, or unmaximize, topmost maximized window of current monitor workspace (not using window controls)
- double clicking on top panel (but not in application's menu)
- dragging top panel down.
- middle click on maximize - maximize window vertically.
- right click on maximize - maximize window horizontally
- focus topmost maximized window of current monitor workspace: left click on top panel (but not in application's menu)
- tiling - dragging window left/right border auto tile side of screen.
- middle click on application's launcher icon - open new instance of application in new window. if application isn't running open normally.
- middle click on top panel or window title bar (but not menu) - send current window behind other windows.
- alt-left drag inside window - move window
- alt-middle drag inside window close border - resize window
- alt-right click inside window - window accessibility menu
