nvidia - Ubuntu Login bounce back - Ask Ubuntu


disclaimer: have tried existing answers various questions already. none of them worked.

problem: when login ubuntu 14.04 via gui, i'm redirected login page again.

observations:

  • i'm able login via terminal (using alt+ctrl+f1)
  • when login via gui, i'm not getting password mismatch errors. redirect me login screen again.
  • i'm able login guest in via gui.
  • creating new user , logging in under 1 has same problem.
  • /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf not found (only users.conf exist in /etc/lightdm/).
  • under ~/.cache/, sessions not there. (identified while trying answer ask ubuntu)
  • linux-generic date.

background:
changed login password per this. i'm getting problem after that.

things tried:

  • updating (sudo apt-get update)
  • removing .xauthority file.
  • reinstalling lightdm.
  • installing gdm instead of lightdm.
  • reconfiguring above lightdm.
  • changing ownership of .xauthority.
  • reinstalling nvidia.
  • purging , reinstalling ubuntu-desktop.
