no sound card found after upgrade - Ask Ubuntu
just upgraded old dell 5150 16.10. sound card not detected , instead shows 'dummy output'. found few threads regarding problem , followed instructions - namely purge alsa , pulseaudio, install same, followed reload , reboot. still no card detected 'system settings gone. ran upgrade again, followed instructions again, exact same result (proof of insanity?). dead sound card perhaps?
as per instructions output of sudo lshw | grep -a11 multimedia
-multimedia unclaimed description: audio device product: nm10/ich7 family high definition audio controller vendor: intel corporation physical id: 1b bus info: pci@0000:00:1b.0 version: 01 width: 64 bits clock: 33mhz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list configuration: latency=0 resources: memory:efffc000-efffffff
i expect sound device picked automatically module snd-hda-intel
best guess missing firmware loaders , possibly alsa-base well.
the firmware not automatically installed reason (legal?) need enable multiverse repository in software & updates if it's not enabled.
issue command sudo apt install alsa-firmware-loaders alsa-base
you have alsa-base won't harm attempt install if on safe side i've included in command above. don't think you'll have reboot, can't hurt so. if doesn't trick have resort more in-depth troubleshooting
