networking - Intel Quad NIC 82571EB gets no link in installed Ubuntu Server, but works in Live Desktop - Ask Ubuntu
i have intel quad-port gigabit ethernet controller in hp ml310e gen 8 v2 server (which has onboard dual-port broadcom bcm5720).
when boot ubuntu desktop live usb (16.04), 6 ports work expected: when cable connected link, led on port lights , corresponding 1 on switch lights.
i installed ubuntu server (16.04), , none of intel ports link @ all. leds never light , ethtool reports "link detected: no" each port. using proved-good cables. broadcom ports work fine. able make leds each port on intel card blink ethtool -p.
i found report of ostensibly similar problem here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=159454 resolved by:
echo on > /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000\:09\:00.0/power/control
(for each of correct pci ids) - , in case key set 'on'.
as card works when boot live usb desktop, believe card , cabling fine, i'm unable work installed ubuntu server. third from-scratch install i've tried now. in previous attempts tried downloading , building e1000e drivers intel's site, made no difference @ all.
would appreciate advice community can give - thanks.

the interfaces showing disabled interfaces not declared in /etc/network/interfaces. please amend file to:
# file describes network interfaces available on system # , how activate them. more information, see interfaces(5). source /etc/network/interfaces.d/* # loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback # primary network interface auto eno1 iface eno1 inet static address <redacted ip in 10. range> netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway <redacted> dns-nameservers 10.whatever.the.gateway 8.8.8.8 #auto enp9s0f0 iface enp9s0f0 inet dhcp #auto enp9s0f1 iface enp9s0f1 inet dhcp #auto enp10s0f0 iface enp10s0f0 inet dhcp #auto enp10s0f1 iface enp10s0f1 inet dhcp
incidentally, if declared interface, eno1 expected reach internet, dns nameservers required. have taken liberty suggest in proposed edit above.
reboot , check:
sudo lshw -c network
are intel ports no longer disabled? if so, can transfer cable 1 of them, rearrange /etc/network/interfaces , proceed.
