Windows XP installation, no previous version of Windows NT - Super User

i tried reinstall windows xp on lenovo s10e netbook, got error:

no previous version of windows nt can found on computer. setup cannot verify qualify install upgrade product. quit setup, press f3

this notebook has no optical drive, installing xp via usb pendrive.

old post. answering anyways in hope nobody ever need information since xp long since dead.

xp , addional drivers:

in order access harddrive need drives mass storage , drivers hdd controller. first build xp. second might be.

if driver on xp installation cd not need anything. if driver not on standard cd have @ least 2 choices:

  1. create custom cd addition drives (slipstream),
  2. or load driver during setup. instructed installation process 'press f6 load additional drives'. @ stage press f6 , insert floppy relevant driver.

xp , ahci

in past used many storage devices. sorts of scsi, esda, ata etc etc. of these need drivers. time xp reached sp3 home systems had moved ata interface , there relative few chipsets. means drivers these chipsets added installation cd , user got used things 'just working out of box'.

this no longer true move sata. sata in normal ahci mode not compatible ide/paralel-ata. need add drivers. if there ever xp sp4 these added. never got xp sp4. instead home users moved vista, win7 , beyond.

this means we:

  1. either need load driver. without driver no harddisk controller , no harddisk behind controller found.
  2. or need set sata interface slower, less capable mode compatible p-ata/ide.

option 1 best, tough need come prepared right driver on floppy. , time floppy drives had become rare. means windows not find disk (and no previous nt installation on disk) when boot xp cd in normal ahci mode no added drivers.

this 1 possible reason op's installation failed.

an other possible reason op wiped disk , used upgrade cd. upgrade searches previous installation no longer there. obvious fix: use regular xp cd.

usb

lastly there booting usb part. can boot usb pendrive firmware (bios) supports it. works if firmware has knowledge how usb , mass storage woks , can emulate via old 0x80 interrupt. after xp initialses takes on usb , needs relevant drivers. depending on sp , chips used these might not loaded @ time.
