Should I really follow all these steps to dual boot with Windows 10? - Ask Ubuntu
it's been many years since i've installed sort of linux distro. in day, yes, of steps in this article required successfuly dual boot windows & ubuntu.
but ubuntu on 16.10 now. should try "install ubuntu alongside windows" option , let ubuntu sort of figure out partitions/boot manager/everything? or end broken boot manager or messed partition?
i've skimmed page linked, looks reasonable, 1 caveat: page gives insufficient detail on how determine boot mode , control boot of ubuntu installation medium correct mode. in brief, computers windows 8 , later come windows installed in efi/uefi mode. (but not all) windows 7 installations use bios/csm/legacy mode, vast majority of earlier windows versions. if installed windows yourself, bets off, except older versions (vista , earlier, except on exotic platforms), support bios mode.
it's imperative ubuntu installation use same boot mode windows installation. see this page of mine information on determining current boot mode. see this other page of mine information on compatibility support module (csm) , how control boot mode of ubuntu installation medium.
if install ubuntu in wrong boot mode, you'll find difficult or impossible control os boots; hence importance of getting detail right.
one more caveat: (too many) computers have broken efis forget boot settings. if you're unlucky enough have such computer, you'll have employ ugly workarounds fix problem. numerous questions , answers on site address such problems. see this one starting point.
