video - What's the difference between libavcodec-ffmpeg-extra56 and libavcodec-ffmpeg56? Which should I install? - Ask Ubuntu
as title says - what's difference between libavcodec-ffmpeg-extra56 , libavcodec-ffmpeg56? should install?
i'm using kdenlive auditioning other non-linear video editors. matter of these packages installed, presumably 1 ffmpeg , 1 ubuntu bawdlerised version (or avconv now?)?
advice please?
edit, packages.ubuntu.com:
package libavcodec-ffmpeg-extra56
xenial (16.04lts) (libs): ffmpeg library **additional** de/encoders audio/video codecs [universe] 7:2.8.8-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 [security]: amd64 i386 7:2.8.6-1ubuntu2 [ports]: arm64 armhf powerpc ppc64el s390x
package libavcodec-ffmpeg56
xenial (16.04lts) (libs): ffmpeg library de/encoders audio/video codecs - runtime files [universe] 7:2.8.8-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 [security]: amd64 i386 7:2.8.6-1ubuntu2 [ports]: arm64 armhf powerpc ppc64el s390x
if @ files (plain, extra) difference appears file in /usr/share/lintian/overrides/
. .so
files identically named , versioned.
libavcodec-ffmpeg-extra56 adds additional, useless encoders:
libopencore_amrwb
- adaptive multi-rate wide (amr-wb). outdated format used in old phones.libopencore_amrnb
- adaptive multi-rate narrowband (amr-nb). outdated format used in old phones.libvo_aacenc
- aac-lc audio encoder. this has been removed upstream in ffmpeg since it's crappy encoder , native ffmpeg aac encoder (-c:a aac
) better.
so there no reason install particular package unless need encode amr. i've never had need so.
ubuntu no longer uses libav fork including avconv
. use ffmpeg
.
