chkdsk - Disk consistency check hangs - Windows XP - Super User
whenever turn on pc warning “system disks must checked consistency”. when starts goes through step 1 of 3 fine, when gets step 2 (verifying indexes) stays @ 0%. i’ve tried leaving 10 minutes or , never moves. in end have reboot , skip consistency check.
i same problem when run chkdsk manually command prompt. step 1 fine, step 2 stays @ 0%
i know how disable boot time check (with chkntfs), don't want that, check disk , make sure ok.
can done?

update
i left chkdsk running @ command prompt , after 10 minutes did something:
c:\>chkdsk type of file system ntfs. warning! f parameter not specified. running chkdsk in read-only mode. chkdsk verifying files (stage 1 of 3)... file verification completed. chkdsk verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)... deleting index entry index $o of file 25. deleting index entry index $o of file 25. deleting index entry index $o of file 25. deleting index entry index $o of file 25. deleting index entry index $o of file 25. deleting index entry index $o of file 25. deleting index entry index $o of file 25. deleting index entry index $o of file 25. deleting index entry index $o of file 25. deleting index entry index $o of file 25. deleting index entry index $o of file 25. deleting index entry index $o of file 25. deleting index entry index $o of file 25. unspecified error occurred.
the "deleting" messages appeared 1 one on next few minutes, last 6-8 appeared together, stopped helpful "unspecified error". stage 3 never run. there nothing in event log.
update 2
i came issue few days ago. having backed decided leave scan running overnight. when checked next morning waiting @ login screen. rebooted see happened , boots fine no warnings. perhaps, given long enough, chkdsk able sort out.
it looks not ok, , in such way chkdsk can't handle (not positive sign). suggest trying alternative such diagnostic software systemrescuecd. , new hard disk.
