encryption - “sudo ecryptfs-recover-private” gives “find: ‘/run/user/1000/gvfs’: Permission denied” - Files Lost? - Ask Ubuntu

edit - update have found file original passphrase failed upgrade 14.04, , have confirmed on current 16.04 that same passphrase exists. using

:/home$ sudo ecryptfs-unwrap-passphrase /home/lenub/.ecryptfs/wrapped-passphrase [sudo] password john2: passphrase:  {passphrase displayed}

that seems indicate may in fact still have original files, can not decrypt , mount them.

this similar “sudo ecryptfs-recover-private” gives “find: ‘/run/user/1000/gvfs’: permission denied” after botched (?) upgrade although in case think files may have been lost (the related question mentioned not have accepted answer).

however understand additional questions should not asked in original question decided seems appropriate ask separate question.

in case had 14.04 installed , tried upgrade 16.04 when prompted upgrade new lts version available. upgrade locked , left me unbootable ubuntu. (the lenovo laptop boot triple boot: ubuntu, puppy linux & windows10) installed 16.04 trying keep original home partition took me 2 install attempts.

the laptop has 1 hdd. had not realised had encrypted home partition. has separate partitions /swap /home , / have 16.04 installed , working, , hoping may able files 14.04 install.

if try encryptfs-unwrap-passphrase error find: ‘/run/user/1000/gvfs’: permission denied

:~$ sudo ecryptfs-recover-private [sudo] password john2: info: searching encrypted private directories (this might take while)... find: ‘/run/user/1000/gvfs’: permission denied

i suspect have in fact lost info may have had. current user in new install "john2" old install have hoped recover "lenub"

/home$ sudo ls -al total 40 drwxr-xr-x  7 root  root   4096 oct 30 16:48 . drwxr-xr-x 25 root  root   4096 nov  2 09:43 .. drwxrwxr-x  5 root  root   4096 oct 30 16:48 .ecryptfs dr-x------  3 john2 john2  4096 oct 30 13:31 john drwx------ 19 john2 john2  4096 nov  5 16:26 john2 dr-x------  2 john2 john2  4096 jan  2  2016 lenub drwx------  2 root  root  16384 jan  2  2016 lost+found john2@john2-lenovo-ideapad-n586:/home$

looking @ file listing not have recover.

any 1 able offer advice on can look, or can either recover files may have, or confirm nothing kept , there no point in looking further.

annoyingly coincided me misplacing memory stick had backups on it. reminder worth keeping multiple backups. (i @ least have older copies of lost files elsewhere)

you haven't lost it!! had exact problem too, , did unmount /gvfs directory me command was: umount /run/user/1000/gvfs. ran ecryptfs-recover-private command , worked. know how freaked out @ thinking had lost information. hope helps else.
