dual boot - How to install windows 10 alongside ubuntu 16.04 when the hard disk is ex4 formatted? - Ask Ubuntu
this question has answer here:
i not want loose data. data important. have ubuntu 16.04 installed on lenovo g50-70 laptop , partitions formatted in ex4. have dual boot windows 10 alongside ubuntu internet says have format ex4 partitions ntfs , windows recognize partitions. can solve issue without loosing data?
first, if have important data, make sure it's backed up. test backup see important data can retrieved.
windows doesn't understand ext4, ubuntu understands ntfs fine. ubuntu can network windows computers, can file sharing on network. it, need windows (because said so), , need ubuntu, because that's data now.
i can see few options:
install windows alongside ubuntu, according directions in link @patricknegus provided. real pain do, , you'll need pay new windows license buying copy of windows. lots of finagling may required computer boot right.
back important data, install copy of windows , let erase hard drive, install ubuntu alongside windows in dual-boot mode, , recover data backup. can use ubuntu copy data , ntfs partition, windows can see it. if haven't blown away computer's recovery partition, might able use computer's recovery process reinstall windows when bought computer; otherwise, you'll need buy new copy of windows. simplest , reliable option if have 1 computer, believe or not.
use external computer windows, , share data on network.
install virtualization software virtualbox, , install windows virtual machine. again, you'll need buy windows license. create virtual host-only network windows instance in virtual machine can communicate ubuntu host. warning, virtualization great, solves sorts of problems , fun play with, there's learning curve; you'll encounter whole new class of problems.
good luck.
