mount - How do I set permissions for a specific (mounted) location? - Ask Ubuntu
my system has 2 (major) partitions: ubuntu install (mounted @ /
, obviously), , windows install (mounted @ /win32
).
furthermore, i've symlinked folders windows partition on ubuntu partition (namely ~/documents
, ~/music
, ~/videos
, , like). way, have system set folders stay in sync each other in reliable manner.
however, run problem can't alter permissions @ all, because files owned root
, not me.
ideally, i'd set (somehow) system in such way /win32/users/owner
(and nothing else) has both user , group set owner instead of root. i'd keep root
owner of else, such avoid accidental mistakes on part.
is possible? how this?
assuming mount /win32
cifs fstab
entry, can set uid
, gid
(as other options related user mapping , permissions - see man mount.cifs
) in mount options in /etc/fstab
.
i have no windows partitions verify this, quite sure mount them more once. mount root of windows partition read-only on /win32
, , user home directory read-write somewhere else. i'm not sure if @ /win32/users/owner
, i.e. overlaying mounted /win32
tree. can filesystems, not all.
if cifs doesn't allow such mount, maybe bind mount (see man mount
) can trick. otherwise of course mount outside /win32
tree, e.g. @ ~user/win32
or something.
