boot - migrating to RAID1 - Ask Ubuntu

my computer polluted bit when upgraded ubuntu 16.04.1 15.10, , not works (i have use xterm instead of gnome-terminal, etc.) plan fix 'pollution' doing fresh installation of ubuntu 16.04.1, copying home directory, , installing missing packages. computer has 500 gib drive, running out of space. bought 2 two tib drives, plan use replace 500 gib drive; 2 drives in raid1 configuration. here's plan:

  1. make 500 gib drive unbootable.

  2. shut down, unplug 500 gib drive, , plug in both 2 tib drives.

  3. boot server install dvd, install server edition of ubuntu, , have installer configure 2 two tib drives raid1 array. install ubuntu-desktop package make system desktop system.

  4. shut system down, plug 500 gib drive in. boot.

  5. mount 500 gib drive, , copy home folder (~) 500 gib drive raid1 array.

  6. install packages missing; ones need, of course.

my question is, how make 500 gib drive unbootable, when boot system both old 500 gib drive , 2 tib raid1 array present, computer knows boot 2 tib raid1 array? simple using gparted remove boot flag first partition?

also, can see holes in plan?
