Installing ubuntu 16.04 without losing data - Ask Ubuntu
this question has answer here:
currently , running ubuntu 15.10 on dell laptop (ram-4gb) . want install ubuntu 16.04 lts on laptop ubuntu 15.10 no more supported. don't want lose data while changing os , can install 16.04 without losing data .

first things first: backup, backup, backup!
back of important data external hdd. dd
entire contents of internal hdd external 1 if want complete 1:1 image of hdd.
warning! take no responsibility if fails , lose data because failed up!
before begin, run command find out username:
whoami
write output down! (also write down password)
now reinstalling:
download ubuntu 16.04 iso
burn iso dvd, or use included startup disk creator program make live usb drive.
boot install media created in step #2
choose install ubuntu
on "installation type" screen, choose something else
select ubuntu system partition, , set mount point
/
. be sure keep same format type, same size, , untick "format" checkbox (else data on "/" deleted!)when asked create username , password, use ones wrote down earlier!!! (else loose data)
after installation finishes, follow prompts shutdown, , remove installation media when tells to.
reboot , cross fingers.
