ssh - Using SCP and nohup to transfer large folder between servers - Ask Ubuntu
i want copy ~50gb folder 1 server another. understandably going take quite while, i'd able perform "in background". using standard scp command requires me keep console open. read nohup
, seems should trick, i'm struggling work. seems require console left open - after typing in command, nohup
program remains open, , if press ctrl+c exit transfer stops. misunderstanding nohup
does? or how else can achieve this?
the name nohup
refers hup
signal, traditionally sent processes when (telephone-)line terminal connected through server hung up. nohup
prevents signal being sent, when "hanging up" nowadays means "closing terminal window".
tl;dr want close terminal window (or kill ssh connection on side) instead of logging out of server regularly. nohup
keep process running, if terminal connection breaks in 1 way or another.
