command line - How to get a login screen on a serial terminal? - Ask Ubuntu

i trying connect serial (dumb) terminal ubuntu 16.04lts system. there how-to's around, have problems them . need "simple" logon message on serial terminal - after unixoids multi-user-systems. 1 of suggestions led dead system, requiring re-install.

gtkterm using /dev/ttys0 connects ok terminal, i.e. typing text on serial terminal , reading on gtkterm works ok typing on gtk , reading on dumb terminal - connection set-up ok.

i read "https://help.ubuntu.com/community/serialconsolehowto", not sure portions need when need additional "login" screen on dumb terminal, "only".

for above text, set-up file ttys0 mentioned facing issues when entering sudo start ttys0:

start: connection upstart not possible: failed connect socket /com/ubuntu/upstart: connection set-up rejected."

the user member of these groups: uucp dialout cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin sambashare

i don't want tamper grub etc, need ubuntu login-screen, ones see when typing e.g. ctrl-alt 1..6, on serial dumb terminal.

any advice pointing me in right direction highly appreciated

the serialconsolehowto link to has become outdated replacement of upstart systemd. error see emitted upstart backward compatibility layer.

systemd has service called serial-getty precisely need. service definition @ /lib/systemd/system/serial-getty@.service references man systemd-getty-generator , this documentation, according need add kernel parameter console=ttys0.

if works advertised (i cannot test on machine), please consider updating serialconsolehowto include information in section "xenial , later".
