nautilus - Renaming files in terminal; now no launcher and no dash appear - Ask Ubuntu

i using ubuntu 14.04.02 on virtual box (5.0.26 r108824)

tonight batch renaming files via terminal rename -n 's/^/161102_/' *.gsf within specific directory. renamed files appeared in terminal removed -n. re running code renamed files did not appear in directory working within. closed nautilus on hope refresh itself. on reopening nautilus renamed files did not appear , original files visible?

i restarted machine , no launcher, no dash custom desktop wallpaper. can open terminal , open nautilus , browse directories , files. however, when enter ls in dir, below

jarrod@jarrod-virtualbox:~/documents$ ls jarrod@jarrod-virtualbox:~/documents$

there files in dir can see using nautilus.

in terminal if enter

sudo su

and re-run

root@jarrod-virtualbox:/home/jarrod/documents# ls root@jarrod-virtualbox:/home/jarrod/documents#

i same results

on desktop can (mouse) right click , standard menu popping (e.g. new folder, new document, open terminal etc)

if wait ubuntu time out , login dialogue box appears can see dash , launcher in background, when login guest above issues encountered.

any solve issues great!

thanks in advance!
