the problem

i have 1tb transcend external hdd (inner chip wdc_wd10jpvx-22jc3t0_wd-wx11a15r3ac8) , when try safely remove either file manager or command line udisksctl unmount -b /dev/sdb1 , udisksctl power-off -b /dev/sdb1, pops again , won't power off.

i'm using ubuntu 16.04.1 lts.

  • it happens either usb2 or usb3.
  • it can safely removed in either mac or windows!
  • i tried 16.04 live , not safely remove! hd can safely removed in live 16.04 booted in pc, , can safely removed in laptop in windows!

these output after running udisksctl unmount -b /dev/sdb1 , udisksctl power-off -b /dev/sdb:

  1. udevadm monitor
  2. udisksctl monitor

i have cheap wd black has same issue , there no firmware update available. use back-up drive attach 1/week, stopped worrying , unmount partitions , unplug it...

has been successful last 4 years or so.
