files - Merging nested folders - Ask Ubuntu
my first posting here. though may seem common question, i've searched entire forums , still couldn't find solution specific problem. decided ask.
i'm having lot of trouble solving backup problem. need merge several enclosed , non enclosed folders, each own (slightly different) copy.
let me explain. i've created several copies of hard drive along period of time functioning backups. problem these weren't incremental backups. crazy may sound, these actual copies of whole folders/files, stored in external drive "backupfeb2015", "backupnov2015", "backupjan2016" , on.
(i had reason that, explaining here take long , not important)
in each of these "backupmmmyyyy" have several other folders, pics, docs etc.
inside pics, instance, may have "triptoxplace", "triptoyplace" etc. idea.
i'd able copy "backupnov2015" "backupfeb2015" , have them both merged, is, each thing in folder of same name (backupnov2015's triptoxplace copied backupfeb2015's triptoxplace) , gets merged in order have them , still avoid both duplicating or losing new files added folders through time.
would possible?
i this: take oldest backup folder , rename "backupfeb2015" (or be) "restore" or other name like. copy new location or few levels up. go source location, rename "restore" folder "backupfeb2015" , rename next 1 "backupnov2015" "restore". copy , paste destination location containing restore. way copy operation detects folder same name , can choose "merge folders" or that. choose "do files" or , proceed. ask files too. until had backup folders , should have merged in new folder. old ones still there, not loose anything. luck
