Problems installing 16.04 in dual boot with Windows 10 - Ask Ubuntu
i have desktop windows 10 installed. i've added new drive (an m.2) can dual boot ubuntu desktop 16.04.
here's setup:
/dev/sda
ssd windows 10 on it./dev/sdb
old hdd that's win10 "d:" drive/dev/sdc
new m.2 drive want install ubuntu on.
the ubuntu install goes fine until have install grub, @ point fails "unable install grub in /dev/sda". options install different drive, continue without grub, or cancel. trying change different drive doesn't work: can change drive dropdown "ok" button doesn't anything. have abort install.
same results if start "install ubuntu" or if load live cd try install there (as people have suggested other people's posts).
well adventure... got working.
i had whole afternoon's worth of stuff, think short answer had enable efi in bios before install grub windows (/dev/sda) drive. think having efi/uefi/secure boot or of ilk turned off allow me freely install stuff..
prior fix, though, updated motherboard's bios firmware. mention in case other users need same. after updating firmware found (in windows) ethernet controller needed new drivers (no network connection) had run , forth windows machine other ubuntu machine usb stick download transfer necessary files. besides ethernet controller drivers sneaker-netted else looked interesting, nic drivers big issue.
so once had windows working right (with efi turned on in bios) tried reinstalling ubuntu 16.10 scratch on m.2 drive (/dev/sdc). time around went through without hitch. held breath while installing grub made through.
so contributed here. install more work should have been still learning experience.
now configure ubuntu side way it....
