boot - Grub won't install - Ask Ubuntu

i'm trying install ubuntu dell xps. have existing windows 10 install on it, i'd prefer not loose. have empty partition of 400 gb. however, grub keeps failing install. also, bootloader appearantly broken now, can't boot hard disk @ @ moment.

what's i've done far:

  1. i tried install ubuntu 16. fail on grub install. after getting error message , prompt 3 options on how proceed, installer crash. read ubuntu 14 might me around issue.
  2. i booted ubuntu 14 disk, , set install ubuntu 14 same partition had attempted install ubuntu 16 to. grub still failed install same error message. but, installer didn't crash time.
  3. i rebooted machine ubuntu 14 disk, loaded ubuntu in live mode , ran boot-repair. gave me several commands run, still fails when attempts install grub.

the error message is:

enter image description here

also, on command line saw these messages:

installing i386-pc platform. grub-install: warning: attempt read or write outside of disk `hostdisk//dev/sda'. grub-install: error: embedding not possible, required cross-disk install.

boot-repair generated diagnostics report: http://paste.ubuntu.com/23450135/

you're using:

  • a software-raid (never idea)
  • with dual boot (a bad idea)
  • installed grub on 1 of members of software raid (/dev/sda) bypassing software raid (a terrible idea),

so need to:

  • restore software raid boot sector first by:
    • restoring boot sector backup.
      or
    • reading manual of software raid don't specify is, nor boot-repair...
  • install grub on /dev/mapper/isw_caeddgafgj_array0and not on /dev/sda
