ppa seems offline. whenever use sudo apt-get update

how fix these errors?
automated removal
skip bottom of answer scripted way remove offending software-sources ubuntu versions prior ubuntu 15.04
what 404 errors
the 404 or not found error message http standard response code indicating client able communicate server, server not find requested.
the web site hosting server typically generate "404 - page not found" web page, when users attempts follow broken or dead link.
what causes of these errors in update-manager
typically, 3 main areas cause these errors in update-manager
- a user has upgraded , has re-enabled ppa software-source no longer exists
- a user has manually typed in new software source incorrectly
- a ppa added, maintainer has subsequently deleted some/all of ppa
where these software-sources
ppas typically saved in 1 of 2 locations
/etc/apt/sources.list
- in appropriately named file .list file-extension in
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/
examplewebupd8team-jupiter-natty.list
this list file typically contains:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/jupiter/ubuntu oneiric main # deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/jupiter/ubuntu oneiric main
note #
@ front of line of text means commented out , not checked package manager.
how eliminate these errors
typically, if run sudo apt-get update
terminal or click details button in update manager after hitting refresh button see errors such as:
if error due ppa - unticking named ppa url shown in error message resolve this.
if 404 error due additional repository has been added /etc/apt/sources.list
easier add #

gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
scripted removal ubuntu versions prior 15.04

you can download deb package , install directly:
wget https://launchpad.net/~fossfreedom/+archive/packagefixes/+files/banish404_0.1-4_all.deb sudo dpkg -i banish404_0.1-4_all.deb
n.b. same deb package distributions.
questions/comments/improvement please via launchpad contact me link
