i've migrated windows 10 kubuntu in august. since then, data backup persistent problem. works, files special characters (german umlaute ä ö ü ) make problems. i wouldn't mind if these characters not displayed. system can't read files anymore. data synchronisation rsync sometomes works , not - same drives. i've spent days , think understand basic things character sets. what i've noticed dolphin (the file explorer) displays same file in 1 or other character set. e.g. file "Ü" displayed later (without reboot) "Ã" example. thanks lot help!

i'm running ubuntu 16.04. made mistake of apt-get installing kubuntu-desktop, , removing it. i've solved visible problems, apart missing icon in top right panel. similar issue mentioned in strange icon in unity top menu bar after installing kde . icon i'm seeing 1 red-circle-in-the-box thing. i've tried steps mentioned, , tried figure out app causing turning off things via unity tweak tool... , appears it's not built in one. if click weird icon, pop menu, no entries. there way figure out application icon for? there list somewhere? i reinstalled ubuntu-desktop, no avail. as jos mentioned, checked processes running, , killing klipper solved issue. seems removing kubuntu-desktop leaves behind klipper in startup applications, creates icon in panel, doesn't anything. removing start applications solved issue.

i needed delete files within ~40 directories within parent directory, without deleting directories themselves. ended manually doing so, there more efficient way of doing this? i.e., there linux command can this? for more clear picture of mean: homedirectoryname --> subdirectoryname --> 4 simulation info files i had above path, except there 40 subdirectories, each of have 4 simulation files. needed delete simulation info files without deleting "subdirectoryname" directories. it may not possible, searched everywhere hour before deciding manually. it's simple find command - use -type f find files , not directories find /path/to/parent/directory -type f -delete by default, find recurses subdirectories, find files in tree point down.

recently reinstalled ubuntu server (16.04), having trouble resizing partition(s). during installation, specified partition should 200gb (of 500gb). did because have identical computer smaller drive (250gb disk). if went wrong computer, simple restore on other computer , have , running again in no-time. now, sure specified 200gb disk size. if @ df -h says 200gb. (note: says 180gb arguments sake keep simple). so, once had server installed , configured, wanted extend partition include remaining 300gb of disk space. however, when @ gparted screen it doesn't have unallocated disk space available. do, however, have unused space. perhaps understanding of partitioning in ubuntu incorrect. understanding that, if specify 200gb disk space, have 300gb of unallocated space. or @ least space can still allocate something. cannot resize in gparted seen in screenshot. what did wrong , possible resize root folder max disk space? edit: per request, output of sudo lvdisplay
