wireless - 16.04.1 LTS server drops wifi connection when ethernet disconnects (NUC6i5SYH) - Ask Ubuntu

tldr: headless server connected via ethernet on 1 ip , wireless on another. live ssh sessions on each. pull ethernet cable, wireless gets torn down along it.

details:

setting new nuc6i5syh headless media server. it's not important me thing connect wifi, wandered down path of headless wifi management education of all.

fresh nuc box, built-in wifi left unconfigured during initial bios setup. while connected via ethernet, installed network-manager , nmcli, , got wifi connection , going:

sudo nmcli device wifi connect <ssid> password xxxxx

(this cmd had repeated few times varying errors succeeded , stuck)

ssh wireless ip. pull ethernet cable. both connections torn down. router tells me wired , wireless mac not connected, no ip addresses either.

it's repeatable: connect ether, wireless comes it, disconnect ether, wireless disconnects it.

on reboot no ethernet cable, wireless comes , connects champ. (but plugging in ethernet cable not ip, seems that's different issue).

what's wifi behavior on ether disconnect?
