my computer offline night executing python scripts. wifi turned off , had disabled networking completely. in morning found software updater offering me new updates installed. when clicked install, updater warned me requires installation of untrusted packages. computer offline entire time. should worried nasty e.g. malicious attack had occurred during night or before went offline? distribution ubuntu 14.04.3 lts. my assumption 2 things happened during night: a) system automaticly ran apt update issued aptd didn't find - due no connection , b) downloaded packages - not regard security updates - offered updated - setup in system settings - applications & updates - updates . this combination lead packages being untrusted, there no current hashes them. manually checking new updates either running update-manger (found in applications or sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade terminal should solve this to sure nothing else happened , check source-lists ,

i don't understand how dd treats partition tables when copying full disk. i backed whole disk (which had multiple partitions) using sudo dd if=/dev/sdb conv=sync,noerror bs=64k | gzip -c > /media/notsdb/backfile.img.gz now have brand new disk without partition table want put these partitions onto. reverse command should gunzip -c /media/notsdb/backfile.img.gz | sudo dd of=/dev/sdb conv=sync,noerror bs=64k . make sense , have put partition table onto disk first? well i'm quite new linux , notice crap on system. perhaps not breaking leaves polluted. make backups stored on remote server that's running ubuntu server 16.04. most preferred way initiate backup manually while leaving task self automatic if possible. (so don't accidentally backup polluted/broken state) should allow easy way restore previous backed copy. alternatively store backup on local drive depending on what's suitable. how should go achieve if may ask?
