launcher - gedit default directory and .desktop file - Ask Ubuntu

i have icon gedit in launcher in ubuntu 16.04. had problem multiple icons in launcher (see, e.g., why there 2 icons in unity launcher nautilus?), solved random unlock launcher-lock launcher actions. have single icon starts gedit.

however, when click on icon, gedit started in /. visible in embedded terminal , in save location new documents (as location 'open other documents' when new document in focus).

how can change location? tried edit /usr/share/applications/org.gnome.gedit.desktop read exec=cd ~;gedit %u resulted in compiz being active 10sec @ 15% cpu , terminating without starting gedit.

when start gedit terminal in directory location set directory.

i have /usr/share/applications/gedit.desktop file not used. dconf-editor shows org.gnome file used, , indeed making changes file (e.g., changing captions) reflected in launcher.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/gedit/+bug/194904 , https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=504067 suggest not possible

2 comments noteworthy:

gedit remembers last folder document saved, think cannot applied right now. open bug again if think current behavior not 1 expected.

regarding first issue, right. right after installation, gedit suggest /home/$(user)/ directory save file instead of /home/$(user)/documents. think should changed (if not problem of ubuntu).

  • the initial save location (ie. user home) hardcoded gedit
  • gedit remember new save location , make default
