since hardy, ubuntu can reinstalled while preserving home without separate /home: see ubuntureinstallation.

few people know it, since hardy it's possible reinstall ubuntu without losing content of /home folder (which contains program settings, internet bookmarks, emails... , documents, music, videos have put in it). even if /home not on separate partition

of course, should have backup of data.
