networking - Ethernet port and WiFi adapter not detected, Ubuntu 16.04 - Ask Ubuntu

excuse me newbie mistakes i'm making, first time running linux distro. i'm running ubuntu 16.04 off live usb drive on dell vostro 2510. if plug ethernet cable in, doesn't show under network. cable , connection work fine on other computers, i'm thinking it's os not detecting port on computer. same thing happens wifi, os doesn't detect laptop's wifi adapter.

i've tried disabling , reenabling networking taskbar. here's screenshot network settings: screenshot

here's ifconfig:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ ifconfig lo        link encap:local loopback             inet addr:127.0.0.1  mask:255.0.0.0           inet6 addr: ::1/128 scope:host           loopback running  mtu:65536  metric:1           rx packets:4852 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0           tx packets:4852 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0           collisions:0 txqueuelen:1            rx bytes:358752 (358.7 kb)  tx bytes:358752 (358.7 kb)

i'm left no way access internet on machine. how can fix this?
