boot - Ubuntu 14.04 on external hdd as the only hdd - Ask Ubuntu

this question has answer here:

i have laptop internal hdd dead in. question how install ubuntu on new external hdd , have laptop boot without internal drive being installed. i've looked @ other questions , while similar, havent found matches. want use ubuntu run wine can play world of warcraft private (legal) server. thank in advance.

the short answer is: no problem install ubuntu external hdd using standard installation process.

however

there several things should take in account here before do.

  1. how have determined hdd dead? in other words, sure it's irrecoverably broken?

  2. what kind of external hdd using? usb 2.0 or 3.0? laptop have usb 3.0 ports?

  3. would comfortable opening laptop replace or @ least remove broken hdd?

have tried running ubuntu live usb stick , tried access files on broken drive? have tried diagnostic tools smart data & self tests of ubuntu disk utility when running live usb. can found typing disks in dash. enter image description here

usb not give same data throughput rates internal hdds sata connection. when drive or ports usb 2.0 may bad experience when gaming.

given have means afford new hard drive , or in circle of friends or family comfortable replacing in laptop think satisfying , long-term viable option. keep in mind need 2.5 inch hdd if buy new one. can new ones 500gb starting @ 41,90€ online.

if you've thought 3 points above , think installing external hdd viable option @ moment, should pose no problem standard ubuntu installer.

if have disconnected broken hard drive , external drive hdd present can tick 'erase disk , install ubuntu' option in installer.

if broken hdd still connected , can recognized ubuntu have pick 'something else' option installer. select external hdd bootloader installation dropdown menu seen in image (note: external hdd not /dev/sda. see descriptions matches drive) enter image description here

delete existing partitions on (everything under /dev/sdx x letter of drive you've selected bootloader installation) , add new partition on consuming unallocated space.

then proceed installation.
