grub2 - Resolution Problem Using Ubuntu on a Dell Monitor - Ask Ubuntu

i having trouble running ubuntu on custom made desktop (some specs below). problem @ point monitor shuts off , gives me message:
the current input timing not supported monitor, please change input timing 1920x1200@60hz
initially having problem during installation, when first purple screen come hit down arrow , set nomodeset , added "vga=0x14d" end of command. allowed me continue without getting above error on monitor. once installation complete edited /etc/default/grub include line:
grub_gfxmode=1920x1200
then entered:
sudo update-grub
and restarted computer. when grub screen, fine after again run input timing error. have tried various permutations , combinations in edit screen can't seem set resolution see ubuntu once has started up.
relevant specifications:
ubuntu version: 16.04
motherboard: asus x99-e
gpu: nvidia gtx 1080
monitor: dell u2412m
edit: motherboard not have integrated graphics card.
edit2: tried following answer graphics issues after/while installing ubuntu 16.04 nvidia graphics, setting nouveau.modeset=0 @ end of line begins "linux" not work, still input timing error above , if cannot boot ubuntu unable install drivers.
