14.04 - Install Ubuntu: Wipe previous installs but do not touch my data partition - Ask Ubuntu

i have non-functional installation of 14.04, byproduct of failed upgrade 16.04 , attempt @ reinstalling 14.04. related to

install ubuntu iso... cannot install grub

broken 14.04 lts while upgrading 16.04

so want reinstall 14.04, wiping previous installs. want data partition sda4 untouched , accesible. posible? option should selected installation menĂº?

i'm assuming have system partition separate data partition sda4. not sure if sda4 /home partition. these instructions assume is. if not, must add /home partition in same manner / partition added in these instructions.

first, data partition. boot live usb

choose else option in installer.

on partition screen:

double click system partition (sda1 or whatever)

use ext4 journaling file system

format partition

mount point /

double click home partition (sda4 or whatever) << this data partition

use ext4 journaling file system

do not format partition

mount point /home

double click swap partition (sda5 or whatever)

just make sure says use swap area

at bottom of screen, device boot loader installation, set system disk (sda)
