16.04 - X will not start after upgrade. Number of monitors does not match number detected - Ask Ubuntu

last night upgraded 16.04 lts. upon trying log in kept resetting.

went terminal screen log on. if try startx little in way of useful info.

/var/log/xorg.2.log not have obvious error messages can see.

running x :1 -configure returns error:

(++) using config file : "/ome/username/xorg.conf.new" (++) using systemconfig directory "/usr/share/x11/xorg/conf.d" number of created screens not match number of detected screens.

i have dual monitors installed on nvidia geforce gt430. @ /home/username/xorg.conf.new , can see 2 monitors set up.

lsmod | grep nvidia shows nvidia module installed.

i've tried reinstalling binary drivers after being told:

the distribution provided pr-install script failed! continue installation anyway?

when selecting yes. error:

the kernel header file /lib/modules/4.4.0-45- generic/build/include/linux/version.h not exist.

despite making sure sources installed sure enough versions.h not exist in dir.

any ideas?

wineunuuch2unix had it. turned out running old driver install script. downloaded latest nvidia website , script ran correctly.

in process of messing around had installed nouveau along way caused conflicts. needed uninstalled , disabled did per question.

install nvidia driver instead nouveau
