12.04 - "No system tray detected" major problems after update - Ask Ubuntu

i converted friend ubuntu 12.04 few years back, computer has never had issues know of , has been kept date. today's update has broken things. there "no system tray detected on system" message , once logged in background image displayed. no launcher, no desktop icons, no panels @ all.

i did compiz failure 1 time during of this, , bug report notice, prompt restart compiz, nothing changed.

ctrl-alt-t won't pull terminal used ctrl-alt-f2 command line - date.

some searching , reading suggested missing dependencies , hplip issue, python-gobject , gobject2 installed python-appindicator, hplip wasn't installed installed , rebboted, nothing has changed... ideas how fix appreciated!

i manually made jump 14.04 hope might fix - problems persisted. noticed during update there errors , forced installs around nvidia 304 drivers afterward yanked card , seems run fine on intel integrated graphics.

so seems graphics driver problem...big surprise...all of linux problems have somehow strangely been graphics card related in 1 way or another, if have similar issue (or issues) there first. in experience nvidia's drivers have broken things seem unrelated gpu @ - wifi. amd's opensource efforts pay off , there decent gpu options in future.
