partitioning - Make xubuntu persistant - Ask Ubuntu

so, yesterday installed xubuntu onto aging laptop using universal usb installer - fine , persistant. (i let program create 4gb persistant file) realised needed more storage space posted on question asking how increase 4gb persistant file. (or creating partition)

i decided no great loss start on formatted usb (64gb) gparted live cd. created 1 small fat32 partition install , huge ext4 persistant files. labled ext4 partition casper-rw , ran universal usb installer on again - selecting 8gb fat32 partion had made (the 1 visable in windows) let program install xubuntu fat32 partition , let format again (leaving ext4 partion alone)

i booted xubuntu live fine without persistance. attempted install steam sudo apt , promptly told me had less 250mb disk space availble. know how can enable persistancy in ext4 partition? , why programs not install it? not seem mounted anywhere need mount in specific location? i'm not bothered data loss , i'm open completley re - formatting usb drive. apreciated. in advance.

reply (because don't have enough reputation) yeah want make ext4 partition persistent. told full install on usb stick extremely slow , unusable - true?
