drivers - How to gather info and find out why my computer is slow? - Ask Ubuntu

i have dell latitude e7440. here specs.

vendor_id : genuineintel cpu family : 6 model : 69 model name : intel(r) core(tm) i7-4600u cpu @ 2.10ghz cpu mhz : 586.933

[biostation]:~% lspci | grep vga 00:02.0 vga compatible controller: intel corporation haswell-ult integrated graphics controller (rev 0b)

[biostation]:~% cat /proc/version linux version 4.4.0-45-generic (buildd@lgw01-34) (gcc version 5.4.0 20160609 (ubuntu 5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.2) ) #66-ubuntu smp wed oct 19 14:12:37 utc 201

[biostation]:~% lsb_release -a no lsb modules available. distributor id: ubuntu description: ubuntu 16.04.1 lts release: 16.04 codename: xenial

it has 16 gb of ram

the problem have can become slow no apparent reason. e.g have chrome running 4 tabs open , terminal window ssh @ other server.

i looked @ running processes , none of them seems take mem or cpu usage, plenty of ram still available, yet jerky on desktop when move around.

i suspect graphics controller, don't know how test or search problem. found cmd

[biostation]:~# /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p opengl vendor string: intel open source technology center opengl renderer string: mesa dri intel(r) haswell mobile opengl version string: 3.0 mesa 11.2.0 not software rendered: yes not blacklisted: yes glx fbconfig: yes glx texture pixmap: yes gl npot or rect textures: yes gl vertex program: yes gl fragment program: yes gl vertex buffer object: yes gl framebuffer object: yes gl version 1.4+: yes unity 3d supported: yes

but seems give good

here thing (i can imagining it) when laptop docked in (dock has external display) don't notice problem latency of kind, when work on laptop stand alone seem have sort of issues. 1 example of inkscape. when laptop docked in can use inkscape (it has issues latency, think sort of memory leak, because see ram keeps going up, usable), when try open same svg file during stand alone laptop work. can't super super laggy, inkscape only, whole computer.

there other issues dell , ubuntu, such docking , keyboard driver, want focus on graphics issues. maybe compiz buggy or unity..? how figure out causing fan spin hard? /var/log file study?

many thanks
