partitioning - About installation off of dvd on to a NTFS partition - Ask Ubuntu

this question has answer here:

i have 81gb partition on 500gb hard drive want install ubuntu don't know how using "something else" option. please me..

installing ntfs not supported

unfortunately, ntfs not support unix/linux file permissions , impossible install ubuntu on ntfs partition. have delete/shrink ntfs partition , create new ext4 or other supported partition(ext4 purposes).

since cannot answer original question, can provide next best alternative.

alternative solution

  1. shrink ntfs partition
  2. create new ext4 partition
  3. in installer, set it's mount point "/".
  4. (optional) create swap partition(like, place ram-dump if ram gets full, put it.)
  5. continue installation usual. you'd done.

refer link well: how use manual partitioning during installation?

an experiment

what i'm describing below not @ all practical , recommended. if you're interested in experimenting, should read person did run linux on ntfs. sum in short:

  1. create big file in ntfs partition.
  2. format file ext4 partition.
  3. mount file drive in installer.
  4. install linux virtual partition. in short, install linux file.
  5. use super grub disk @ boot time select boot file in linux installed.

there. have linux inside ntfs drive. i'm not sure how mounting original drive work put , security , practical implications of be, possible, least.
