system installation - Dual booting Ubuntu on UEFI without USB - Ask Ubuntu

i wondering if possible install ubuntu on surface pro 4 (uefi, have disabled secure boot) , dual boot pre-installed windows 10. don't have usb drive or disk , thinking of installing directly hard drive.

the description of ms surface pro 4 indicates has usb port. thus, recommend buy usb drive, if don't have one, , install way. if that's impossible, procedure should work, caveats:

  1. repartition disk has partition ubuntu installation .iso file (as big or bigger file) and create ubuntu partitions want.
  2. write ubuntu .iso file partition created it. in ubuntu, you'd use dd, can boot nothing windows @ point, you'll need use else. perhaps windd work.
  3. download , install refind boot manager. must install iso-9660 filesystem driver comes it.
  4. reboot refind. should show ubuntu .iso image boot option.
  5. select ubuntu .iso image. should boot , should able install normally, 1 caveat: might want or need tweak partition type codes of of partitions created earlier.
  6. after you're done, may want delete ubuntu .iso partition or employ in other way (like swap partition).

the big caveat here step #1. iirc, windows' partitioning tools let shrink in-use partition, i'm not 100% positive of that. also, i've never tested procedure. know various critical pieces of work in other contexts, i'm not sure fit in exact procedure. instance, know refind, iso-9660 driver installed, can boot ubuntu installer .iso file when written partition on usb flash drive; don't know work correctly computer's main disk, particularly when that's ubuntu installation target.
