system installation - Ubuntu installer fails in various ways - Ask Ubuntu

i'm trying install ubuntu-16.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso live usb drive. fails in different ways depending on choices installer.

way 1: boot installer, connect wi-fi network, , check "download updates while installing". can "install now" step, after "erase disk , install ubuntu" (with "use lvm" checked, though may not important, since tried other things below). click "install now", window pops partition info, , click permission go ahead -- , seems stuck spinning cursor. (i waited @ least 30 minutes, on hour.) might wrong? can find out? downloading updates time without saying it's doing?

the sha256sum of iso checks out. when wrote usb drive (using rufus usb installer, following the directions), set "check device bad blocks" option, , passed.

the first time tried install, picked "install alongside windows" instead of "erase disk", , seemed hang same way. maybe repartitioning hours while displaying spinning white cursor , not letting me -- that's plausible -- behavior see same. (i decided didn't want windows install enough wait more hours on repartitioning, , powered off.)

way 2: if instead click "try ubuntu" button @ start, screen goes text mode , infinite list of printk messages scroll read. bits can make out sometimes: "n printk messages dropped"; "pcieport"; "pcie bus error" (i think); "receiver layer error status" (i think?); "mask=00..."; "physical layer"; "id=00e0 (receiver id)".

way 3: way 1, without connecting wifi, or checking "download updates". gets further, setting keyboard layout, name , password, , time zone. starts apparently installing os disk. after short wait, reports "we're sorry, installer crashed." saying it's out of disk space. if had guess, might not have recovered interruption of repartitioning when tried way 1, although afaik should not matter because fresh install supposed erase whatever on disk before.

this new dell xps 8900 ran windows 7 professional no problem.

update: did not figure out did manage install debian instead. it'd have better idea went wrong, i'm not going mess debian install.
