grub2 - change resolution on server boot screen resolution - Ask Ubuntu

i've installed ubuntu 16.04.1 minimal , kodi 16 (jarvis) onto 64-bit amd mobo radeon hd 5000/6000/7350/8350 series video card using these instructions

i setup kodi autostart using nopassword user kodi using these instructions. went , kodi runs beautifully displaying on 50" panasonic viera plasma, connected radeon card via hdmi.

my problem boot/terminal screen resolution, way overscanned, extent screen extended 10 columns far left of visible screen. iow, in terminal window, cannot see $ prompt or text left of 12-14 characters.

i can ssh server , i've tried use xrandr (as root , sudo), can can't open display. when try change user kodi run xrandr, i'm asked password , system not accept blank password (user kodi has no password).

i'm sure need adjust default screen resolution along lines of 1280x720, cannot so. i've read solutions suggest grub config edit, i'm not sure how need go.

i've looked @ the x instructions here have no xorg.conf file , cannot xrandr show me except can't open display. can need via ssh, i'd able see terminal screen on tv display when necessary.

thanks tips!
