16.04 - Is it safe to disable Secure Boot? - Ask Ubuntu

i wanted know if safe me disable secure boot purpose of installing latest nvidia graphics driver.

i running windows 10 alongside ubuntu 16.04 on acer aspire v nitro. each have own partition on same hdd.

secure boot forces both windows , ubuntu require system level drivers "signed", proving approved authentic software. idea good, , on windows, microsoft signs of drivers.

however, on ubuntu, user may require special drivers wireless card, video card, or specialty hardware. these drivers unsigned, can come number of different sources. if secure boot enabled, , drivers not signed, these drivers not load. in order them load, each driver must "signed". process of signing drivers not extremely difficult, can hassle... if change/update driver, or change/update kernel software part of ubuntu. each change require resign driver.

so, imagine this... system running fine... have secure boot enabled... drivers signed... , use ubuntu's software updater , installs new kernel... or install new driver... , reboot system find wireless card may no longer work, video card doesn't display properly, or specialty hardware no longer works. must recompile , resign of modules again. not fun.

on own system, use 5 custom dkms driver modules require resigning after every ubuntu kernel update. oh my.

short story... disable secure boot , happy. windows won't care, , ubuntu survive software updates , driver installs less work on part.
