hdpi - Is there any Ubuntu flavor that handles HiDPI consistently? - Ask Ubuntu

although know how tweak here , there..

i wonder if there ubuntu 16.04 (or newer) variant specializes or works 'out-of-the-box' hidpi screens.

for matter, interesting know , recent linux distribution works hidpi...

update:

thanks answers not looking way adjust machine. aware of these tweaks , using few of them. question more towards ubuntu variant (such mate, mint, etc.) handles hidpi well. ubuntu mate part of roadmap not there yet. wonder if there available.

no, there isn't answered date.

what "consistent"

before 1 disagrees answer, make sure understand question op. given 1 needs manually set dpi value or scale factor of desktop environment, varies different monitors, can't ubuntu "handles hidpi consistently".

i'd understand "consistent" more towards out-of-box experience (even op has mentioned in question). is, in terms of ability of operating system use appropriate settings given hardware , application software respects settings.

does ubuntu offer out-of-box experience hidpi support? no, or uncertain.

hidpi support ubuntu

trusty tahr (14.04) first ubuntu release explicitly mentioned hidpi support. before release, relevant information can traced this dated message.

cairo 1.13 snapshot in ubuntu-desktop ppa (hi-dpi support testing)

better support hi-dpi screen topic being discussed coming lts [...]

from trustytahr/releasenotes 14.04:

from xenialxerus/releasenotes 16.04:

  • improved hidpi support in greeter
  • support scaling cursors in hidpi environments

hidpi support others

from blog post kubuntu , hidpi screen dated 16 february 2016, giri alam:

kubuntu/kde not perfect on hidpi screen. currently, there no utility automatically detect , scale ui based on device screen resolution , dots per inch (dpi) value, workaround make kubuntu more usable on hidpi screen quite simple.

from blog post ubuntu mate 16.10 alpha 1 dated late june 2016, on ubuntu mate blog:

we have initial hidpi support (almost) working. don’t excited, or nothing implementation. when enabled gtk3+ applications (not mate) rendered using high quality pixel doubling. if have 2160p display, looks ace :-d

however, no mention of hidpi support status in final release note of ubuntu mate 16.10.

from gnome wiki howdoi/hidpi:

gnome enables hi-dpi support when screen resolution @ least 192 dpi , screen height (in device pixels) @ least 1200.

from reddit thread of budgieremix dated mid-june 2016, prior becoming ubuntu budgie:

there doesn't seem hidpi support in native settings menus, or on lock screen. scaling on lock/login screen added ubuntu 16.04 hidpi monitors. [...] scales correctly scale factor of 2, there 1 issue. [the icons in system tray] not scale , not appear correctly.

and replied answer:

none of current members of development team has hidpi monitor cannot reproduce issues raise :(

overall hidpi support

although have not quoted other sources here, mentioned flavours hidpi support ubuntu gnome , ubuntu (unity). mentioned kubuntu/kde , xubuntu/xfce, not information hardware worked these flavours.

disclaimers

this answer intends review hidpi support status, 2016, ubuntu , official flavours. following limitations shall noted:

  • some flavours not mentioned @ because had no relevant information of hidpi support

  • non-ubuntu flavours or unofficial derivatives not mentioned, such linux mint/cinnamon, elementary os/pantheon

  • i don't have hidpi monitor or hidpi supported hardware verify above information; answer solely quotes relevant information web

tl;dr date, hidpi support work in progress, regardless of distribution , desktop environment. there isn't ubuntu flavour handles hidpi consistently yet.
