windows vista - Ubuntu partition not loading - Super User

i have 2 partitions. vista installed on 1 , installed ubuntu on other. during ubuntu setup said not install boot loader.

i used easybcd create new vista boot entry linux pointing linux partition. when choose entry @ start gives me grub command line.

im not sure do, thanks!

success seems vary user user. let me give impressions. , extent depends on purpose installing ubuntu , experience level is. assume semi newbie purposes of explanation thinking of future readers. have ubuntu installed on several computers several reasons

first - dual boot, windows being primary os.
i use ubuntu once in while when need or want it, or play around it, tied windows reason on pc
use wubi.exe install ubuntu secondary os no repartitioning. done installing livecd running windows computer , running wubi. necessary install ubuntu in such way if ever want take off computer go "add/remove" control panel , uninstall ubuntu. keep windows first os in boot menu, create totally "normal ubuntu" boot other fact runs within container file , not partition. not virtual machine, , not ubuntu running "within" windows in sense, performance hit not having it's own partition non existent in experience. can use livecd , gparted put partition before doing if want.

second - dual boot, ubuntu being primary os
i know want permanent ubuntu installation, , leave windows on here convenience , because it's paid for, why rid of it.
boot livecd, , ubuntu, run install program (or alternatively boot menu). let installer whatever wants regard repartitioning , creating proper boot settings. have installed windows first have cleaned up, backed up, , defragged disk.

in recent experience there 2 possible problems. first should reinstall ubuntu , let boot configuration, if want separate partition , don't mind ubuntu default boot (though easy enough change in grub) use second method if want try ubuntu out use first.
the second potential problem think 9.10 has more it's share of problems install , boot areas (and loves , uses ubuntu). if me install 9.04, update (but not upgrade) until 10.04. opinion though based on several actual events.
