grub2 - Windows 10 Ubuntu dual boot - Ask Ubuntu

recently tried dual boot ubuntu 16.04 windows 10 on acer aspire laptop uefi , ran many issues. main issue being after installation of ubuntu 16.04, grub2 bootloader worked first time , never again when tried reinstalling , several workarounds. ended having format hdd , install ubuntu 16.04 itself.

i picked hp laptop , want dual-boot afraid windows 10 problem have worked uefi many times , never had issue.

i read on several forums windows 10 breaks grub. few months ago. nothing worked , many others complained of same issue.

many suggested reverting windows 8 or 7 , worked them.

my question is, few months have passed. has issue been resolved?

does know of guaranteed method works?

has canonical possibly fixed issue?

when first tried dual-boot, windows 10 released.

is no longer issue?

appreciate help! not want start process if going run same issue.

you seem think there one issue wreaks havoc windows 10/ubuntu dual-boots. that's not true; there many issues, of occur on small subset of computers. thus, way answer question write book on subject. literally, book. author of on 20 published books on computers, i'm not exaggerating.

in cases, can install little preparation , work normally. other times, you'll run 1 of many problems. minimize risk of encountering problem, or recover should so, can read on way efi works , how ubuntu (or other linux distributions) works it:

i know that's long reading list, , don't want read of pages. if can read 1 or two, recommend adam williamson's blog post and/or page on installing linux on efi systems.

beyond that, specific problem areas. biggest of these buggy efis forget settings. problem used common less common -- more common should be. hp used known offender in area, impression recent models fixed. dell , asus seem above average in efi implementations. less-popular brands troublesome, general rule.

bad instructions issue. in particular, many sites , posts (especially older ones) recommend enabling bios/csm/legacy mode; if windows installed in efi/uefi mode, enabling bios/csm/legacy support asking trouble. page on csm describes why in detail.
