dual boot - Installing Ubuntu on a spare SSD connected externally to a Windows laptop - Ask Ubuntu

i have personal laptop running windows 10 , use linux(ubuntu 16.04.1 lts) without installing on primary hard disk.

i bought additional ssd drive , thinking of externally connecting laptop via esata or through sata usb adapter. ideally, install linux on disk, can keep clean , isolated. then, i'd setup dual boot on laptop.

is configuration possible? if so, please advise or direct me documentation page on how can set up?

also, setup, able make ubuntu portable, such can unplug ssd when i'm carrying laptop around , plug when needed?

if plug in ssd on windows laptop, still work?

or, should drop plan altogether , try install , run ubuntu usb flash drive instead?

my laptop has 2nd gen i3 processor 4gb ram , 128gb ssd. runs windows 10 smoothly.

what propose possible. remember need configure bios boot ssd. not necessary, if want access windows must make sudo update grub every time change computer update bootloader. may need install additional drivers wizard each laptop. remember if want compatibility older computers should choose 32-bit version
